Sand Equivalent Test
The sand equivalent test can be used rapidly in the field or laboratory to find the relative proportions of clay-like materials or fine dust in granular soils. Most soils (or fine aggregates) are a mixture of particles which can become problematic and even prevent proper aggregate-asphalt binder bonding in some instances. The sand equivalent test is used to determine if a desired aggregate has enough dust or clay that it would disrupt the hot mix asphalt (HMA) or its performance. The test separates sand and clay, a comparative reading is determined between the suspended clay and the settled sand in the measuring cylinder. This testing can be used in combination with the Durability Index Test.
